A very common birth defect, and one that is usually easily treated by surgery. The condition is characterized by an opening or split in the upper lip, in the case of a cleft lip, and a split in the roof of the mouth for the cleft palate. These conditions can occur simultaneously, or independently.
The procedure is done under general anesthesia, and it takes between 2 to 6 hours, depending on the severity of the case. It’s recommended that the procedure take place during the first year of age. Most cleft lip surgery patients go on to lead perfectly normal childhoods in both health and appearance.
