This is a very common condition that affects millions of people every year. Age, pregnancy, diabetes, or repetitive motions (like typing or the use of a computer mouse) can strain the wrist, thus giving way to pressure on the median nerve that runs along the length of the arm. This nerve goes through a passage in the wrist called the carpal tunnel, and when this tunnel is narrowed as a result of the pressure, it results in painful swelling.
The surgery is relatively simple. Local anesthetic is typically used for this procedure. Recovery time takes usually from three to four months, but it can be up to a year for complete hand strength to return.
