The hymen is a thin piece of tissue that surrounds or partially covers the vaginal opening, and which is commonly ripped or teared during the first bout of sexual intercourse, but not always. This may cause temporary bleeding, and in some cultures it is considered to be a test of proof of virginity.
It is possible to reconstruct a torn hymen, though the surgery is usually meant to be temporary. This is generally carried out as an outpatient surgery.
